The Great Route of the Alavesa Plain

220,00

“Doing cycling is a feeling that brings us closer to freedom.” In Alava we have the opportunity to make a very safe route that transits through the green ring of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the old route of the vasco Navarro train track, the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir and the Camino de Santiago.

Pedaling along the Alavesa Llanada is the best way to enjoy an environment that will remain in your memory. Let yourself be guided by this endearing land where history, nature, agriculture and livestock shake hands. This 117 km adventure is designed for all types of audiences and we have divided it into two stages.

Itinerary

1st day

The adventure begins at the Ataria Center, gateway to Salburua Park. We will get on our bikes and pedal through one of the most valuable continental wetlands in the Basque Country (protected by the Ramsar Convention of International Importance and Place of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 European Network). Dozens of species live together, highlighting the European mink (Mustela lutreola)

We leave the city by the green ring until we connect with the greenway of Vasco Navarro. Here I circle “the trenico” until 1967 linking the towns of Bergara (Guipuzcoa) and Estella (Navarra).

We arrive at the dam of the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir. At this point we will take the path that goes next to the swamp contemplating wonderful and green landscapes and we can even observe the birds in the different viewpoints that we will find. At the height of Mendixur we began to pedal along the Royal Postage Trail that during the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries constituted the road through which the mails that were going to France transited. We are in the heart of the alavesa plain, surrounded by cereal fields and at the foot of the Basque Mountains. And it’s here, in the village of Zalduendo, where you’ll spend the night.

2nd day

After breakfast we roll again through the heart of the Alavesa Plain. Much of the kilometers of this stage pass along the road of Santiago. And on the side of him, in Gazeo, we can see “a pearl” of the Romanesque Alavés, the Church of San Martín de Tours of the thirteenth century. Our journey continues to the Sanctuary of Stybaliz where we will leave the road and return by the Vasco Navarro to Vitoria-Gasteíz.
